Download Race Driver: GRID - Download Race Driver: GRIDRace Driver: GRID, the latest release in the original Race Driver: GRID series, is available here to download on PS3, Win, X360, NDS.

Wow!!! A really stimulating game…with the current generation of consoles now really hitting their stride, last year saw a steady influx of triple-A racing titles for petrol-heads to gorge themselves on – from Forza Motorsport's refined take on an established formula, through to the zenith of the Project Gotham series with its fourth installment, and on to the triumphant return of SEGA Rally, there was no shortage of choice for those yearning for automotive thrills. This year, with the imminent release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and the full fat release in the later months, the din of engines has receded to a muted hum. Step forward Codemasters' Race Driver: GRID, which is looking to break the silence and once more get gamers singing the rasped tune of caterwauling engines.

The result of this isn't to make you feel cowed or useless on the track - it's to give the racing a sense of risk, reward and danger that even the awesome PGR4 can't match. The key is GRID's most ingenious trick: a little feature called Flashback. Without it, all the carnage and aggression on the track would make the game unbearably frustrating. With it, the difficulty level is just about right. Here's how it works. Take a bad corner on the final lap, spin off the track, write off your car or get blasted into a barrier by an over-zealous rival, and a simple press of a button puts you in an instant-replay mode. And when I say instant, I mean just a few seconds' pause at most. Use the controls to zip forwards and backwards through a brief stretch of footage, find a good spot, whack the Flashback button, and within a moment you'll be back on the track, doing whatever you need to in order to avoid whatever disastrous combination of events wrecked your race.

Besides a graphically stunning presentation, GRID provides a very strong racing challenge by keeping the goal just within arm's reach. Computer opponents rarely make mistakes, even on easy mode, and the winding tracks often provide gorgeous views of various cities and locales. All taken together, this is one racer worth having in your collection.
